It has long been a point of consternation for me that things are not “fair”. And I don’t mean fair exactly, perhaps I really mean just. I want things to be just as they should be. I want things to be made right and I often desire to MAKE them right by wrenching and wrestling and taking matters into my own hands. Recently, I heard a wise kid quip, "I HATE letting people think they are right when they are very, *deeply* wrong."
And isn’t that true? Many of us don’t necessarily want to rule everything (though some of us do and are working to submit that to Jesus mmkay??), but we would at least like things to be right and just. In our vastly high opinions of ourselves, we believe that we, in fact, would administer that justice well. When things are unfair, when complications arise in relationships and organizations and people seem to be GETTING AWAY WITH THINGS…we rail against that injustice. But do you know who is not remotely equipped with the knowledge and wisdom necessary for working righteousness and justice well? US.
Consider, however, our great High Priest: the One who is able to sympathize with us. He knows this about us. He knows that we long for things to be made right, for justice to be served, and He sympathizes with us. In fact, on Holy Monday, he demonstrated the only perfect display of righteous anger in human history when He drove out of the temple those who had made His Father’s house “a den of robbers”.
And when He was betrayed by a disciple and denied by a friend — He trusted Himself to the only One who judges justly: His Father.
We can do that, too, you know? We can step back from every circumstance that frustrates, the things that make us crazy with indignation, the things that feel so unfair and we can ask God to help us trust Him to do what is right and to work justice, by His might and for our good and for His glory.
