It’s not that we don’t know He is worthy of our praise — it’s just that praising sometimes feels like we are dragging a half-hearted “woop de-doo” out of the shallows of an unconvinced soul. But Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem hints at a goodness that goes deeper than the weariness or cynicism we may be bringing into Holy Week. On the heels of moments of glory: Lazarus’ resurrection (John 11) and Mary’s anointing (John 12); Jesus sets his face to Jerusalem where He knows what awaits Him.
We often desire to ride from one wave of glory to the next. But here we see a Man who rode from joy in community right into the city where pain and betrayal were waiting.
This week we have an invitation to set our face towards Jesus, who “for the joy set before Him” —us! we are that joy!— “endured the cross, despising its shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
If we can’t pull a bone-weary hosanna! out and offer it to Him, perhaps we can begin this week with our own Palm Sunday practice: hands open, palms heavenward, inviting Jesus to meet us where we are. We might pray, “I believe - help my unbelief!” or simply, “I’m here. Help me know You are near.”
